Wrightsville mayor resigns

— Wrightsville Mayor Lorraine Smith abruptly resigned Tuesday night during a City Council meeting.

After ushering the council halfway through its agenda, Smith had her attorney, Brannon Sloan, read a statement.

"Mayor Smith considers this an opportune time to retire, in that there have been recent disagreements on the council regarding the future of city management and the hiring of a law firm to conduct city business," Sloan read.

When he was finished, she turned in her keys.
