WASHINGTON President Barack Obama is thanking German Chancellor Angela Merkel for her country’s “sacrifice” in keeping forces in Afghanistan.
Obama noted Tuesday that Merkel is being honored as the first German leader to address a joint session of the U.S. Congress. The chancellor had a meeting scheduled with Obama before her appearance on Capitol Hill. She said she wanted to use her visit to express gratitude for American support “throughout the process leading up to German reunification.”
It soon will be 20 years since the Berlin Wall was pulled down, leading to the reunification of Germany, which was divided among the victorious European allies at the end of World War II.
