A former soldier shot and killed his fiancee — a first-year English teacher at North Little Rock High School’s East Campus — in her Skyline Drive apartment before dawn Tuesday morning, police said.
Steven D. Russell Jr., 28, called 911 at about 4:30 a.m. and said police needed to come pick him up at the house in Levy he shares with his parents because he just shot someone in an apartment a few miles away, police said. Russell led police to the Woodland Terrace apartment complex at 1701 Skyline Drive and told them to go inside No. 316, police said.
North Little Rock police arrested Russell, charging him with first-degree murder, possession of a defaced firearm and being a felon in possession of a firearm. Russell was sentenced to five years’ probation in Clark County in December 2008 on a conviction for second-degree domestic battery. The sentence also included substance-abuse treatment and counseling for post-traumatic stress disorder.

My prayers go out to the family. I know Joy personally and she was a really sweet young lady. I don't know what words that I can possibly give that would be comforting, but just know that she was truly loved, admired, and will be missed. God Bless (Courtney Vester)
