Why would anyone write “it goes without saying” if it really did? As in: “It goes without saying that Afghans have had enough of violence.”—Steve Coll in The New Yorker magazine’s “The Talk of the Town” column, October 26, 2009. If it goes without saying, why say it?

Ah yes, The New Yorker. I still subscribe, and like Greenberg, if only for the cartoons. Their covers; At times they just leave me scratching my head in wonderment and amazement, and a somewhat puzzled look on my face.
And, yes, even though Cheever and Updike have passed from this earth (their short stories remain forever), perhaps, yes perhaps, or perchance, someone will come along and write a short story that will help The New Yorker dig its way back to where it once was. Of course, in the meantime, the editors need to start throwing some of the dirt back in the hole, which is the only they can achieve a rise above mediocrity.
In the meantime, I'll probably succumb and renew my subscription in January. I call this hope . . . for The "New" New Yorker.
