2012 offers loud but ultimately empty apocalypse

In the hands of director Roland Emmerich (Independence Day, The Day After Tommorow) the apocalypse is loud and preposterous, blusteringly vacant and at times ruthlessly entertaining.
While the Mayans might not have actually predicted the end of the world, they provided the high concept for the ultimate disaster film 2012, which is played only a little bit straighter than an Airplane/Scary Movie-style spoof.
In Friday’s MovieStyle, our critic Philip Martin says ff you’re fond of old Irwin Allen disaster movies like The Poseidon Adventure and The Towering Inferno and don’t insist on human-like dialogue or sceintific plausibility, then you might just enjoy this sunny atrocity, in which John Cusack discovers the end of the world provides the perfect opportunity to re-connect with his ex-wife and semi-estranged kids.
