LITTLE ROCK 1 GIVE IN
On the first day of giving, my true love gave to me ... free admission Saturday to the Clinton Presidential Center, 1200 President Clinton Ave., Little Rock. The center is celebrating its fifth anniversary with “Five Days of Giving,” Saturday through Wednesday. Saturday the center will also kick off a five-day coat drive — the center will be a drop-off point for coats you no longer need to warm folks without. Drop off your coat Sunday and get a 15 percent discount on Sunday brunch at the center’s restaurant, Forty Two. Former President Clinton will deliver the keynote address for the sold-out “Thank You, Arkansas” Luncheon at 11 a.m. Wednesday on the center grounds. The Clinton School of Public Service is sponsoring the premiere of Arkansas natives Brent and Craig Renaud’s documentary Warrior Champions: From Baghdad to Beijing at 7 p.m. today at the Lakewood 8 movie theater, Lakewood Village, McCain Boulevard and Lakewood Village Drive, North Little Rock. Tickets are $100 (including a copy of the DVD); proceeds go to the Clinton School scholarship fund. Iraq War veterans Melissa Stockwell and Kortney Clemons, featured in the film, will attend; Clemons, an Army medic who lost his right leg to a Baghdad roadside bomb while trying to help a group of wounded soldiers, will sign copies of his book, Amped: A Soldier’s Race for Gold in the Shadow of War. Two giants of the Civil War meet again at the MacArthur Museum of Arkansas Military History. “Lee and Grant,” a new exhibit that examines the impact the two men have had on society through the present day, opens Friday and continues through Jan. 9, featuring artifacts and interactive displays. Museum hours are 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday-Friday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, 1-4 p.m. Sunday. Arts and crafts for children will be 10 a.m.-2 p.m. The museum is at 503 E. Ninth St. Admission is free. Holiday House, the Junior League of Little Rock’s annual shopping extravaganza, opens its doors today-Saturday. The crafts, food, home decor and other goodies will be for sale noon-6 p.m. today, 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday at the Statehouse Convention Center. The University of Arkansas at Little Rock Community Chorus, UALR Concert Choir and UALR Chamber Choir will perform Franz Joseph Haydn’s Te Deum in the Community Chorus’ season opener, 7:30 p.m. today in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall, Fine Arts Building, UALR, 2801 S. CULTURE HUB Spend the day finding out about American Indian culture through dance and storytelling with the Pahsetopah family at the Museum of Discovery’s Tribal Trails. 7 ART ATTACK
Mixed-media collages by Jeri Hillis, photography by Deborah Warren and punk-influenced textiles by Lauren McEntire go on display Friday at the Historic Arkansas Museum, 200 E. Third St., Little Rock. Hillis and Warren’s “Thresholds: Landscape, Memory and Architecture” will remain on display in the Trinity Gallery for Arkansas Artists through Jan. 31; “Navigating Vernacular(s): Works by Lauren McEntire” will be in the Second Floor Gallery through Jan. 3. Game enthusiasts can show off their skills at the big Little Rock GameCon, which includes tournaments in games including Halo 3, Call of Duty 4 and Guitar Hero 5. Artists and actors (including Peter Mayhew, Chewbacca in Star Wars) are scheduled to appear as well. Convention hours are 3 p.m.-midnight Friday, 10 a.m.-midnight Saturday, 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Sunday at the Wyndham Riverfront hotel in North Little Rock. 9 STORY DAYS
The National Association of Black Storytellers will be holding the 27th annual National Black Storytelling Festival and Conference, “In the Tradition …,” through Sunday in central Arkansas, centered at the Peabody Little Rock, West Markham and Louisiana streets. In the daytime, association members will visit schools and libraries, including a presentation and story time for children at 3 p.m. and a performance and story time for adults at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Faulkner County Library, 1900 Tyler St., Conway; admission is free and refreshments will be served; call (501) 327-7482. Families can participate in a little fairy-tale dress-up fun at A Royal Night Out, 6:30-9 p.m. Friday. Community Connections, a nonprofit organization that provides activities and support for special needs children, is hosting this family night of dinner, photos and auctions. The I Can Dancers and ACTS Jr. theater team will provide the entertainment and children will have their own food and entertainment for part of the evening. Children are invited to dress like princesses, knights, kings and other royalty for the night, while the adult dress code is semi-formal. Tickets are $20, $10 per child.
