BOWLING: Officer goes with Freeze for 300

— Mike Payne, a police officer for Sherwood, started the night in the Millennium First League with his 12th 300 game. He closed with games of 246 and 237 for a 783 series.

“I had recently bought a Columbia Freeze ball and have really been bowling well with it,” Payne said. “They were all pocket hits the 300 game. I’m taking both rings, The National Bowling Congress and USBC.

“The week before in the same league, I shot games of 278, 297 and 201 for 776. I left the 2-4-5 on my fill ball for my eighth 11-strikes-in-a-row award.”

Payne, 48, of Jacksonville, a member of the Team Columbia amateur staff, started bowling at 13 in Flint, Mich. He averages 200 and 225.

He won the 1988 Oil Capital singles, plus he was a member of the 1987 and 1990 team champions, was a member of the 1991 and 1999 Central Arkansas Bowling Association city team champions, won the CABA Robert Winkler award for high scratch game with 289 in 1999 and with 300 in 2001, was a member of the 1992 state team champions, won the 2000 state singles, won the 1995 Red River Singles Shoot-out, and won the 2003 Camden Spring Singles.

Payne has five 800 series, with 827 high, and five 299games.

47-YEAR-OLD BOWLER DIES

Stuart Herbert, 47, of Jacksonville, one of the area’s better bowlers, recently died.

A supervisor at Democrat Printing & Lithographing Co., Herbert started bowling at 30 at Heber Lanes in Heber Springs.

He had six 300 games, four 299s, three 298s, a 798 high and one 11-strikes-in-a-row award.

DIS ’N’ DATA

Carla Brewer, with 241-658, received the ArkansasState Women’s Bowling Association 650 award in the Allstate/American Solutions, and Brent Wetzler shot 290-726 in the Millennium First and received his fourth 11-strikesin-a-row award at Millennium Bowl.

Joy Henthorne shot 279-693 and 226-650 in the Wednesday Mixed, and Cindy Covert 236, 221-659 in the Thursday Men’s at Enterprise Lanes in Benton to earn the awards.

Fort Smith’s Tim Dooley qualified 16th in the PBA Southwest Region and will compete in the PBA Regional Players Invitational on Dec. 15-17 in Reno, Nev.

Dewayne Thompson of Fort Smith received $180 as a high senior noncash in the Senior All Star Bowling Association event at AMF All Star Lanes in New Orleans.
