— Gov. Mike Beebe appointed Sherri L. Stewart of Mountain View to the State Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Board. Stewart is the managing attorney of the Mountain View branch of Legal Aid of AR Inc., which serves Stone, Cleburne and Van Buren counties providing civil legal assistance to low-income Arkansans.

Stewart also serves as the dependency-neglect attorney ad litem in Searcy County Juvenile Court. The board is made up of nine members appointed by the governor.

The Arkansas Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Board was formed to oversee the Arkansas Children’s Trust Fund. The board is responsible for establishing policies and procedures that govern the Children’s Trust Fund and forreviewing and approving all Children’s Trust Fund grant applications.

The board also promotes the establishment of a Local Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Council in every county of Arkansas. Local councils play an important role in helping to establish a network of child-abuse prevention services across the state.

The board also works in collaboration with others around the state to promote programs that strengthen and support families, thereby reducing the incidence of child maltreatment and otherwise improving outcomes for children.

The board also seeks to educate and inform the general public about the importance of and means for preventing child abuse and neglect.
