Cary Gaines

Cary Gaines resigned from the North Little Rock City Council on Friday, four days after being tied to a scheme to defraud the city that was revealed in a federal indictment of a Cabot man.

A grand jury indictment unsealed Monday charged George Wylie Thompson, 64, of Cabot, with conspiracy to commit wire fraud amid allegations of a schme to rig bids on two North Little Rock public projects. Neither project happened.

While Gaines wasn't named in the indictment, the document did say that the alderman involved represented the city’s Third Ward, served in the same position in the early 1990s and recently was re-elected to the position.

Gaines resignation was effective immediately. The City Council has the option of holding a special election to fill the remaining 13 months of Gaines' Ward 3 position or electing a replacement by majority vote of the council.

He is and has always been a crooked man; couldn't happen to a worse person; he is the worst.

I disagree with sjoysmit concerning Mr. Gaines. Their are plenty of "worse" persons around, the jails are full of them.
Obviously, he made some serious mistakes but he doesn't deserve to be harassed by local vigilantes as is being reported by other sources.
It is my hope that the NLR police patrol his neighborhood and arrest some of these thugs and allow Mr. Gaines his day in court. I believe thats the American way.
