— A state prisons spokeswoman says a 35-year-old inmate was killed while he was doing farm chores at the Cummins Unit in Lincoln County.

Spokeswoman Dina Tyler says the inmate was pronounced dead at 8:30 Monday morning. The inmate, who has not been identified, was serving a prison sentence for commercial burglary.

Tyler says the inmate worked in the prison’s agricultural program and was putting feed in a trough for dairy cows when he become entangled in the farm equipment. Tyler says he suffered severe trauma to his shoulder and to a leg.

Tyler says the Correction Department is investigating, along with Arkansas State Police. She says it appears to be an accident and that safety shields were engaged on the equipment when the inmate was using it.
