The Division of Youth Services is spending more than $17 million in stimulus money to build new school buildings at each youth lockup, including Alexander.

Youth Services will use $9.3 million of that to build additional classroom space at youth treatment centers in Colt, Dermott and Harrisburg, new dorms at the center in Lewisville and a new education facility and cafeteria at the unit near Alexander. Some of the buildings will replace portable trailers used as classrooms.

Plans call for breaking ground in December and January. The effort marks the largest investment in new buildings for the division in decades.
