ABC director to deny Wal-Mart request to sell beer

By The Associated Press

This article was published October 9, 2009 at 7:23 a.m.

— The director of the state’s Alcoholic Beverage Control Board says he’ll deny Wal-Mart’s application to sell beer and wine at its Fayetteville stores because of local opposition.

ABC Director Michael Langley says the denial will move the request to a hearing before the full board — likely in November.

Fayetteville Police Chief Greg Tabor and state Sen. Sue Madison have previously said they object to Wal-Mart’s request to sell beer and wine. Both indicated concerns over underage drinking.

Langley confirms the formal objections are from Tabor and Madison. He says he generally turns down beer and wine applications whenever he gets objections.

Wal-Mart is using a Web site and a Twitter account to solicit support for its application.
