Cotton harvest far behind last year

By The Associated Press

This article was published October 21, 2009 at 5:33 p.m.

The Arkansas cotton harvest is far behind the rate from last year.

The National Agricultural Statistics Service says 8 percent of the crop was harvested through Sunday. At the same time last year, 52 percent of the crop had been brought in.

Most cotton growers were late getting their crops planted because of a cold and wet spring, thus plants were late in maturing. Persistent rains during harvest time have caused boll rot, matting, hardlocking and, in some cases, seeds sprouting in the bolls.

Growers planted 520,000 acres of cotton in 2009, compared to 620,000 acres last year. The 2008 crop was worth $349 million.
