LITTLE ROCK Recent DVD releases:
Cheri (R, 108 minutes) Love and lust between the beautiful aging courtesan Lea de Lonval (Michelle Pfeiffer) and the callow 19-year-old son (Rupert Friend) of her colleague Madame Peloux (Kathy Bates) in elegant 1906 Paris is the tantalizing premise of Cheri. And since it’s a film by Stephen Frears (The Queen, The Grifters), you can count on the atmosphere to be sensual, the performances spot-on, and the emotions to be honest.
Grade: 89
The Crew (R, 122 minutes) This lean, muscular contemporary crime drama stars Scott Williams (Pete Best in Ian Softley’s Backbeat) as the elder of two brothers living in Liverpool. He wants to get away from a life of crime; younger brother Ratter (Kenny Doughty) wants to get in. The DVD includes a making-of featurette, deleted scenes, and commentary by director Adrian Vitoria.
Grade: 84
The Elephant King (R, 90 minutes) This handsome film, which falls somewhere between arty festival fare and standard cineplex stuff, features an overly protective mother (Ellen Burstyn) who sends her troubled son to Thailand to lure his reckless older brother home to face fraud charges.
Grade: 80
Love N’ Dancing (PG-13, 98 minutes) If you can get over the clumsy title, this dance romance is light on its feet as it tells the story of Jessica (Amy Smart), whose hidden dance talent is coaxed out by a swing dance champion (Tom Malloy), a happy partnership that hasnot-so-happy repercussions with their significant others.
Grade: 82
Moon in the Gutter (R, 126 minutes ) An opulent 1983 French melodrama from Jean-Jacques Beineix that ultimately doesn’t amount to much because the characters aren’t all that appealing. It’s the story of a Marseilles longshoreman (Gerard Depardieu) who, seeking revenge for the death of his sister who killed herself after being raped, meets an intriguing woman (Nastassja Kinski) who might know something about his sister’s tragedy. The DVD includes a director’s commentary.
