LITTLE ROCK BOYS Coach: Chad Withers Assistant coach: Don Robbins Last year’s record: 8-14 (fifth in conference) Returning starters: The Beavers have one possible returning starter in 5-9 guard Steven Kehner. Kehner is also the starting running back for the Beavers football team and has not decided if he will play basketball again this year.
Best inside players: 6-4 junior Coulter Perry. “He has a chance to be a really good player,” Withers said. “He is a big strong kid and also quite athletic for hissize. He has soft hands and is a good scorer around the rim, along with a good outside shot from about 15 feet.” Best outside players: 6-2 senior Travis Holloman. “Travis is more of a swing man than anything,” Withers said. “In drills, he shows good form with his shot and can put the ball on the ground or just pull up with a three. He is probably the best player that I have.” Games to watch: “Magnet Cove and Bauxite are always the two matchups that the fans like because of the rivalry,” Withers said. “You have to beat the best to be the best, and every game is important this year for us.”GIRLS Conference: 3A-5 South Coach: Chris Smith (year at school: third) Assistant coaches: Randy Aaron (first year) Last year’s record: 21-9 (second in conference) Best inside players: 5-6 senior Catherine Farley. “(Farley) is not going to be a back to the basket scorer. She is going to make a lot of passes to the wing spots, so that is going to be her job as an inside player,” Smith said.
Best outside players: 5-6 senior Chelsea Walker. “(Walker) is a good set shooter,” Smith said. “If you give her time outside she is going to knock the shot down”Strengths of the team: “We have a lot of quickness at some spots on the floor,” Smith said. “Our guard position is a lot quicker than in past years.” Weaknesses of the team: Coach Smith is faced with no returning starters. “We have no depth and no size,” Smith said.
Games to watch: Bauxite and Magnet Cove. Last year they beat Bauxite both times. Magnet Cove beat Glen Rose at home but the Lady Beavers took game two at their place.
College prospects: “It all depends on how they play this year,” Smith said. “I think Chelsea has the best shot. If she has a good year, then she might have a shot at a 3A college.” In a nutshell: The Lady Beavers are faced with a tough road going forward. With zero returning starters, the bench and underclassmen are going to have to step up and play well if they want to compete in the tough 3A-5 South conference.
