Arkansas alternative energy companies say they need Congress to pass the climate bill.

The bill would mandate reduction of carbon dioxide emissions and other pollutants. Backers say the economy would benefit from the bill, which would pave the way for new technology to be developed as the nation moves toward new energy sources.

Oil companies in Arkansas oppose provisions of the bill. But the wind-energy industry, which has a fast-growing presence in the state, say they need the bill to pass so they can get financing to expand.

The group Arkansas Business Leaders for a Clean Energy Economy held a conference call today to voice support for the bill.
