The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette climbed to the 42nd-largest newspaper in the country even though its weekday circulation fell 3.9 percent to 169,458 through Sept. 30 compared with September of last year. The paper was the 47th-largest in the country in a March 31 report.
The Democrat-Gazette’s climb was aided by the weekday drop of about 11 percent at nearly 400 U.S. newspapers, according to an Audit Bureau of Circulations report released Monday.
Little Rock is the 79thlargest metropolitan area in the country.
Paul Smith, president of Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, Inc., was disappointed by the decline.
“Even though we had a much smaller loss than at most newspapers, we usually don’t have a loss in circulation,” Smith said ...

Well, the reason I have not renewed my subscription is simple: A 34% increase in ONE YEAR during a recession is just too much to swallow for the average working person.
A nominal increase from $65 per year for Sunday delivery to maybe, $67 or $68 per year would not have caused nearly the loss of circulation that this huge increase has.
I love the balance of this paper and would like to continue the subscription, but it's not going to happen at these rates.
This is Arkansas, not New York.
