American Airlines will reintroduce mainline jet service to the state’s largest airport next year after a seven-year hiatus.

The airline will use McDonnell Douglas MD-80s on four daily flights between Little Rock National Airport, Adams Field, and Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport beginning in April, officials with the airline and airport confirmed Wednesday.

The model has about 140 seats, which is twice as much as many regional jets carry, and is typically configured to include 16 first-class seats with 124 seats in coach, according to the airline Web site. American flies a total of 272 MD-80s, by far the most numerous model in its 620-aircraft fleet.

I fly a lot and I've noticed improvements in turn-a-round time and delays. Areas I've seen conditions worsen with are carry-on baggage. The increase in fees for extra baggage is congesting the boarding process. This increases the frustration of travlers who abide by the rules, and that is compounded by an increasing number of airline employees that are unskilled in managing difficult customers and the ensuing confrontations that occurr. While customer service at the ticket counter has improved somewhat, it has deteriorated at the gate. Employees there simply don't look up and acknowledge with any consistency.

I just thank God the airlines see fit to come into our state at all with 5 ways to get out on an airline (Little Rock, Texarkana, Northwest regional, Ft. Smith, and Memphis) at least we have plenty of choice. I for one was so happy when regional jets came in as it was a welcome step up from the Brazilian turbo props only as the alternative to bigger jets.

I do believe the one problem in Little Rock still remains as too many planes leaving at once early in the morning congesting the TSA lines.

All I can say is -- YEA! I really do not like those little jets. I have the heebie jeebies the whole flight and of course, they are not the least bit comfortable.

Right On American. I fly in and out of LIT a few times a year and the extra comfort will be nice. Folks, the Airlines are like any other businesses. There is always going to be employees that do not handle problem characters as well as others. Those folks at the gates do an overall great job. It's the idiots in the flying public that cause the problems. There is plenty of information available online or otherwise about what is expected when you arrive at the airport. It seems like some people just have a hard time doing anything.

now i really need to fly to little rock - its been 10 long years (since 1998) the last time i visited my family in little rock - but even then, I thought everything was so perfect - the flight from chicago to little rock most comfy, the hosts and hostesses very very kind and smiling, and the airport of little rock is the most excellent amongs all the airports in the world -
