ARKADELPHIA Henderson State University’s student radio station, KSWH, is one of four national finalists for the “Best Newscast” award to be presented this fall at the National College Media Convention in Austin, Texas.
Paul Glover, an assistant professor of communication and theatre arts who serves as the faculty adviser for KSWH, said the competition includes both Division I and II universities that are members of the College Media Advisors, an organization for faculty and students of media.
“If we win, we will receive the ‘Apple’ award to display in our window,” Glover said. “The announcements take place during a big gathering at the end of the convention which is attended by students, faculty and industry professionals including well-known broadcasters.”
The nominated newscast was “your typical commercial station-type news break-in, though we are a noncommercial station,” Glover said. “It had all the elements of a good newscast, including a music bed, intro/outro, soundbites and our station ID. The newscast itself was from last semester and featured the new recreation center while under construction and included soundbites from Jordan O’Roark (assistant dean of students).”
Glover said he appreciated the efforts of the KSWH staff.
“I am extremely proud of the work KSWH and HTV (Henderson Television) have done over the past year,” he said. “Under the management of recent graduate Jonathan Canaday, we increased our media convergence while maintaining daily newscasts and sports.”
Canaday is now news director of KMTB 99.5 in Nashville, Ark.
