A former state appeals court judge and a Republican candidate for the United States Senate disagree over whether a union organizing bill is good for Arkansas workers.
Former State Appeals Court Judge Wendell Griffen and state Sen. Gilbert Baker debated Monday over the Employee Free Choice Act. Griffen argued that the bill pending before Congress would prevent employers from thwarting the rights of employers to form unions.
Baker, who is seeking the Republican nomination to challenge U.S. Sen. Blanche Lincoln, said the measure would hurt workers by allowing employees to unionize by signing cards instead of holding secret ballot elections.
Democratic lawmakers are working on a compromise version of the bill that may remove the so-called "card check" provision. Lincoln, a Democrat, has said she can't support the bill in its current form.
