Tug of war at War Memorial Golf Course

When the Little Rock Parks and Recreation Department told regulars of War Memorial Golf Course that six holes would be closed until early June because of construction in the park, some of the golf course’s advocates suggested that it was premeditated bureaucratic revenge — the city’s response to their tendency to appeal any park changes that affect the golf course, as Bobby Ampezzan reports in Tuesday’s Style section

“They just want to close this golf course — period!” says Carl Hines, a regular. “Think about it, this golf course property’s worth a helluva lot.”

To the uninitiated, the fuss should raise several questions, such as, “Why the outrage, it’s only temporary? And, they’re not happy with a $1.2 million investment?”

After all, the golfers fought off more invasive plans to keep their 18-hole course, although the overall size will be cut to make way for a cancer survivor’s park and other nongolf recreation. The $1.2 million investment isn’t an upgrade of the golf course but an improvement of the park’s run-down green space.
