Construction to start soon on Fort Smith plant

Mitsubishi says it will start construction this fall on its $100 million wind turbine plant in northwest Arkansas.

Mitsubishi Power Systems Americas says it will employ up to 400 people at its plant at Fort Chaffee.

The company now has more than 4,500 wind turbines in operation worldwide, and more than 3,000 wind turbines in the United States. Mitsubishi Power Systems is owned by Japan-based Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Inc.

The city had a ceremony Tuesday officially welcoming Mitsubishi, with several company executives on hand.

The Arkansas Economic Development Commission says that with the addition of Mitsubishi, wind power manufacturers have invested about $370 million in Arkansas, employing 2,900 people.
