— Lyndsay Risley, a graduate of The Salon Professional Academy in North Little Rock, and Tara Henderson, a student at the academy, were the winners of Mannequin Mania, a contest held during the Discover Hair Show in mid-April in St. Louis.

Contest host was Tabatha Coffey, star of the Bravo TV reality show Tabatha’s Salon Takeover.

Contestants were given 15 minutes to complete a mannequin’s hairstyle based on a bird theme. Coffey chose the top three styles, then the audience chose the final winners by applause.

Risley is a stylist at Electric Chair in Cabot. Henderson, who will graduate in May, owns Inspiration Salon in Gravel Ridge. The two were among 23 Salon Professional Academy students who traveled to the Discover Hair Show, the fourth largest hair show in the country, drawing more than 10,000 salon professionals.

HANGIN’ AROUND

Purse on the floor/purse on the floor/lookin’ like a bum with your purse on the floor ...

With apologies to American Idol hopeful General Larry Platt of “Pants on the Floor” infamy, this rap ditty is my modern alternative to the old superstition “Purse on the floor; money out the door.” (In other words, “Don’t put your purse on the floor or you’ll stay broke.”)

With that in mind, the Clipa ($24.95) provides a possible way to avoid being broke and a sure way to avoid transferring germs and dirt from the floor to your handbag. Made by the Irvine, Calif.-based Topcor, the sleek, hinged, braceletlike circular hanger clips to any handbag strap and features nonslip clip pads to grab onto a flat table surface. To use it, you open one end and slide the Clipa onto the strap. Place one end of the Clipa on the table or other surface and hang the bag from the other end. When ready to leave, simply pull the handbag strap and let the Clipa fall back onto the bag.

The Clipa comes in polished silver or gold, brushed gold or hematite (gunmetal) and also doubles as a bracelet. It’s available at clipa.us. You can also call Topcor at (888) 804-0661.

MO’ MARY

Along with the gaggle of new Mary Kay cosmetic goodies discussed in the last Dressing Room, the directsales company also offers new products in its TimeWise anti aging skin-care collection. These include the TimeWise Body Targeted-Action Toning Lotion ($28), which tones, firms and moisturizes skin via natural ingredients; and the TimeWise Hand and Decollete Cream Sunscreen SPF 15 ($18), which uses fruits and other ingredients for firming, hydrating, dark-spot and wrinkle reduction, and ultraviolet ray protection.

Need to get that makeup off to begin your skin-care routine? Mary Kay also offers its Oil-Free Eye Makeup Remover ($15), a best-seller that removes eye makeup without tugging, pulling or drying out the surrounding skin. See the entire line of TimeWise products, as well as the makeup remover, at MaryKay.com. Call (800) 627-9529, or see your independent beauty consultant.

LIKE A PHOENIX

Bad news: Dress for Success Little Rock - an organization with a mission to provide financially-strapped women with professional job/ interview clothing, support and career development tools - closed its doors in December. Good news: A new board and group of supporters are planning to reopen and begin suiting clients in a new space by July 1.

The board also plans to hire someone to be the day to-day contact for the organization. To accomplish this, partnerships are being sought. Interested parties are asked for tax-deductible donations of at least $20 a month, according to organizer K.D. Reep.

A direct draft contribution form is available at littlerock@dressforsuccess.org. Donors are asked to print the form, complete the information with the amount they’d like to contribute and mail it along with a voided check to Dress for Success Little Rock, P.O. Box 56793, Little Rock, Ark. 72215.

For now, just donate money.

“We are not ready to take clothing donations yet - we don’t have anywhere to put them,” Reep says. Contact Reep or other Dress for Success Little Rock officials at the aforementioned e-mail address.
