A federal official says weatherization efforts in the homes of low-income Arkansans will be boosted by $2.3 million in additional stimulus funding.

A news release Thursday from Energy Secretary Steven Chu said the money will go to a pair of local agencies — the Central Arkansas Development Council at Benton and Crawford-Sebastian Community Development Council at Fort Smith.

The release said federal stimulus money had already been used to weatherize more than 2,000 homes in Arkansas, including nearly 300 in June.

The weatherization program involves installation in homes of new, high-efficiency items such as insulation, air conditioning systems, clothes washers, and water heaters.
