Watson to step down as LR schools chief

Little Rock Superintendent Linda Watson will step down from her job at the beginning of 2011, the School Board decided in a 5-2 vote at a special meeting Wednesday.

Board members did not discuss the appointment of any interim or long-term replacement.

Watson, 57, has been superintendent for 3 1/2 years. The board had decided in July and again in September against extending the contract past the June 30 expiration date.

Watson will receive all of her $198,000 salary for this school year, as well as payment of her health insurance premiums through May and payment for up to 60 unused vacation days and up to 102 unused sick leave days.

Board members Katherine Mitchell and Dianne Curry voted against the motion.
