Dog walkers change winter meeting time

— Dog walkers who volunteer to walk shelter dogs from the Humane Society of Independence County will start walking at 9 a.m. Thursdays for the winter. The group usually meets at 8 a.m. but moved the time back because of the colder weather. The group walks at the North Complex Park in Batesville.

Those who wish to walk are encouraged to call the afternoon/evening before so the shelter staff knows how many dogs and puppies to have ready for walking and what kind of dog is best suited for the walker. Volunteers are also needed to help transport animals from the shelter to the park.

The group typically walks two laps — each lap is a little less than a mile. The first lap lets the dogs get used to their collars, leashes, etc. The second lap, walkers will practice a little obedience training with the dogs, mainly sitting, and give them love and attention.
