ENTERTAINMENT NOTES: Composer Marvin Hamlisch, Conway Symphony tune up

— Composer/conductor Marvin Hamlisch will join the Conway Symphony Orchestra for a concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Donald W. Reynolds Performance Hall, University of Central Arkansas, 201 Donaghey Ave., Conway.

The program will include an Irving Berlin jazz medley; a couple of Hamlisch movie music medleys; excerpts from Hamlisch’s scores for the movies Sophie’s Choice, Ice Castles and The Way We Were; segments titled “Rent a Composer,” “Songs I Wish I’d Written” and “A Chorus Line: The Overture That Never Was”; Ragtime Medley, The Entertainer and Pineapple Rag by Scott Joplin; and music by Jerome Kern, George Gershwin and Harold Arlen.

Moscow musicians

The Chamber Orchestra Kremlin of Moscow will perform at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Administration Auditorium at Harding University in Searcy.

The concert is part of the university’s Classical Lyceum Series.

Misha Rachlevsky will conduct the 17-member orchestra in the Serenade for String Orchestra in e minor, op.20, by Edward Elgar; Chamber Symphony, op.110 bis, by Dmitri Shostakovich (an arrangement by Rudolf Barshai of the composer’s String Quartet No. 8); “Contrapunctus No. 1” from The Art of the Fugue by J.S. Bach; and the Serenade for Strings, op.48, by Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky.

Rescheduled Rehm

Diane Rehm, host of public radio’s The Diane Rehm Show, will make a rescheduled appearance for “An Evening With Diane Rehm,” a fundraiser for Little Rock public radio stations KUAR-FM, 89.1 (which airs the show at 9 a.m. weekdays), and KLREFM, 90.5, at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Embassy Suites Hotel, 11301 Financial Centre Parkway, Little Rock.

The event, a benefit for the stations’ new radio tower, kicks off at 6:30 with music by the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra’s Latin Trio, followed by a three-course dinner, after which Rehm will talk about her experiences as a radio host and her thoughts on the future of public radio.She will then take questions from the audience. Donors of at least $500 to the campaign can attend a private meet-and-greet champagne reception at 5:30.

Rehm had to postpone a September appearance after she fell and broke a hip.

Met at UCA

A high-definition “cinecast” of the Metropolitan Opera’s production of Giuseppe Verdi’s opera Simon Boccanegra, with “bari-tenor” Placido Domingo in the title role, will be on screen at 2 p.m. today in the Donald W. Reynolds Performance Hall,University of Central Arkansas, 201 Donaghey Ave., Conway.

The transmission is part of the “Captured Live From the Met@UCA” series.

Visiting brass

The Synergy Brass Quintet - Bobby Thorp and Greg Lloyd, trumpets; Jon Hurrell, French horn; Jordan Witt, trombone; and Jesse Chavez, tuba - will perform at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Riceland Hall, Arkansas State University’s Fowler Center, 201 Olympic Drive, Jonesboro.

The program consists of arrangements for brass quintet of “The Procession of the Nobles” from Mlada and “Flight of the Bumblebee” from The Tale of Tsar Saltan by Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov; “Dance Boheme” from Carmen Fantasy by Pablo de Sarasate; “A Little Bit of Night Music” and the third movement of the Horn Concerto No. 2 in E-flat major, K.417, by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart; Memphis Blues by W.C. Handy; the soundtracks from two short films, Cinematic Feature and In Remembranceof the Civil War; “Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity” from The Planets by Gustav Holst; and Basin Street Blues by Spencer Williams.

HeArts Ball

Conway Community Arts Association will sponsor the third annual Conway Community HeArts Ball at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 615 E. Sixth St., Conway.

The event will feature live and silent auctions - items include gift baskets, an evening’s lodging at the Crescent Hotel in Eureka Springs and an autographed copy of South of Broad by Pat Conroy - plus food and drink and dance music by Vintage. Dress code is cocktail attire.
