Two school districts 200 miles apart can't merge, the state Board of Education unanimously decided Monday, denying the request by Weiner and Delight school officials.
Both districts have fewer than the 350 students that the state requires as a minimum for a district to operate. The districts will still have to merge because of their enrollments, but the mergers will be with next-door neighbor districts in north and south Arkansas.
The districts said they could set up distance learning programs to expand course offerings and save on some administrative costs.
Weiner is in northeast Arkansas in Poinsett County. Delight is in southwest Arkansas in Pike County.

In my opinion the communities should be allowed to keep their individual school districts by merging with another district administratively. The governing bodies making these decisions
would be sure to take care of themselves in a situation of like
manner. This decision is hard on a town and community, and it takes
away the autonomy of the tax-paying governed citizens.
