Nigeria’s vice president is telling the nation he has assumed the presidency as the West African nation’s leader remains hospitalized in Saudi Arabia.
Vice President Goodluck Jonathan’s televised address comes late Tuesday night after the National Assembly voted to have him assume power. Jonathan asked the nation to pray for elected President Umaru Yar’Adua, who left Nigeria in November for treatment of a heart condition in Saudi Arabia.
Yar’Adua has yet to return, sparking a constitutional crisis in the nation as government business ground to a halt in his absence. He still could assume power upon returning healthy to Nigeria, but questions remain about how ill he is.
