GRADY The Arkansas Parole Board has postponed part of a clemency hearing for a condemned inmate whose execution is approaching.
Jack Harold Jones Jr. is to be executed March 16. A hearing on Jones’ arguments for mercy is to go forward Tuesday morning at the Varner Supermax Unit.
A Little Rock hearing for the victims’ relatives will be set for another time because of the wintery weather.
A jury sentenced Jones to die for the 1995 rape and murder of Bald Knob bookkeeper Mary Phillips. Jones also attacked Phillips’ 11-year-old daughter.
Jones lost appeals in which he challenged the lethal injection method of execution.
Once the hearing is complete, the board can make a nonbinding clemency recommendation to the governor.
