Rogers mayor enters race for Congress

— Rogers Mayor Steve Womack made his campaign for Congress official this morning, telling supporters he is the best qualified candidate in an increasingly crowded field of Republicans in the 3rd District.

Womack, who has been mayor for 11 years, made the announcement at an event at the Embassy Suites hotel in Rogers.

"In each of our lives, as Winston Churchill once said, we will all come to a time and a place where we will be figuratively tapped on the shoulder to do something very profound and suited to our talents," Womack said in a speech that was broadcast live on his Web site. "For me, that time is now."

Rogers said his record as mayor includes balancing the city budget and promoting investment without raising taxes, achievements that he says make him an ideal candidate.

Republican opponents in the race include Gravette businessman Damon Wallace, retired Air Force brigadier general Bernie Skoch, retired Drug Enforcement Administration special agent Steve Lowry and State Sen. Cecelie Bledsoe.

"The field is obviously a crowded one right now," Womack said in the speech. "Voters will likely have to pick from a number of conservative-sounding candidates ... But the real test in this race for Congress is for the voters to be able to discern between talk and action. Examine my record."

The field of Republican candidates in the 3rd District has swelled since incumbent U.S. Rep. John Boozman announced last week that he is running for U.S. Senate.

Democrat David Whitaker and independent Jerry Coon have also announced they are running for the seat.

Steve Womack is a personal friend for the past thirty five years. He is a man of integrity and will be a conservative leader in the House of Representatives. He is the right man for the job at the right time and I urge everyone to vote for this leader who will represent the state of Arkansas with honor!
