LITTLE ROCK A Little Rock attorney who recently served as a special associate justice to the Arkansas Supreme Court will become one of the top court's justices, Gov. Mike Beebe announced today.
Ron Sheffield, 64, will fill one year of the unexpired term of Justice Annabelle Clinton Imber, who retired at the beginning of this year. William H. Bowen had been sworn into the role, but he resigned days later after suffering a slight stroke.
"Ron Sheffield has the knowledge and experience with the Supreme Court to hit the ground running," Beebe said in a news release. "The unique circumstances of this appointment mean shouldering a significant caseload immediately, and Ron is well-qualified to accomplish this with the skill and honor befitting our Supreme Court."
Sheffield worked 27 years with the Arkansas Insurance Department, including seven years as deputy insurance commissioner. He has also served as redistricting director for the Arkansas Secretary of State's office and taught as an adjunct professor at Pulaski Technical College. He has been in private practice in recent years, according to the release.
Imber's term continues through 2014. A special election this year will determine who serves the rest of it after Sheffield's yearlong appointment.
