— A Maumelle man was in critical condition Monday after being shot in the face during a reported robbery attempt at a Pulaski County park.

It happened about 4 p.m. Monday at Jeter Park off Valentine Road in northern Pulaski County.

The victim, Thomas Pickel, was transported to Baptist Health Medical Center. A condition update was not immediately available this morning.

According to a Pulaski County sheriff's office report, Nathan Holloway told investigators he was with Pickel at the park when Pickel stepped out of the vehicle to use the restroom. Holloway told investigators he then watched as a black car pulled up and a man with a pistol got out.

Holloway reportedly heard several shots as he crouched down in his truck. According to the report, he then grabbed his .22 pump rifle and fired a couple shots from the vehicle.

Pickel returned to the truck a short time later with a gunshot wound to the face, authorities said.

Holloway drove to a nearby liquor store, where authorities were called. The incident was reported as a robbery attempt, but sheriff's office spokesman John Rehrauer said it remains under investigation.

"We really don't know yet," Rehrauer said. "That's what the driver of the vehicle told us, but we're not sure about that."

The shooter is described as a black man about 5-foot-10 and weighing about 200 pounds.

No arrest has been made.
