— 100 YEARS AGO July 22, 1910

The temporary loss of a well at the new Arkansas Tuberculosis Sanatorium at Booneville has delayed the opening of that institution according to Dr. C.P. Meriwether of this city, secretary of the Board of Trustees of that institution. Dr. Meriwether received word yesterday that the well had been drilled much deeper and that there is now plenty of water in it. He further stated that the sanatorium will probably be opened either on or just before August 1.

50 YEARS AGO July 22, 1960

By rally, handshake and airwaves this election-eve weekend, Governor Faubus’ opponents to his bid for a 4th term were calling him to withdraw from the race, face them in run-off debates and answer charges on his administrative record. Hal Millsap Jr. of Siloam Springs urged Faubus to “resign from the race,” predicted that next week the governor would have “only memories and nightmares” and described him as the “Benedict Arnold of the South” and the “Nero of Arkansas.”25 YEARS AGO July 22, 1985 CROSSETT - A spokesman for Georgia-Pacific Corp. said Sunday that the timber company would bring in out-of-state crews to restart its paper mill, idled last week by the strike of about 1,000 workers. But David Moffatt said in a telephone interview that no workers had arrived at the mill and he did not know when the facility would be reopened. “I hope that the first part of this week we will have an update,” Moffatt said.

The feud over the ARKids First Medicaid program reached a highstakes level Friday with Gov. Mike Huckabee pledging to ignore a Clinton administration order to stop giving parents a choice between general Medicaid and ARKids. A Huckabee spokesman said the governor is willing to defy the federal mandate in hopes that fellow Republican George W. Bush is elected president in November or until Clinton threatens to cut off federal funding for ARKids.
