ASHDOWN — Officials in Little River County are looking for support for a sales tax increase to pay to build a new county jail.
The existing jail was closed Dec. 31 after the Arkansas Criminal Detention Facilities Review Committee found violations of state standards. A proposed tax increase to build a 96-bed jail for $6.7 million was defeated by voters last October.
The county is now proposing a 3/8 cent sales tax increase to build a 64-bed jail for an estimated $4.9 million.
The question goes before voters on Aug. 10.
