— 100 YEARS AGO July 24, 1910 HOT SPRINGS - The failure of the Garland county Republican convention to nominate a local ticket here this morning, and the scheduled reorganization of the Garland county Democratic Central Committee were developments which brought all politicians into activity and may have an important part to play in the coming campaign. With the Democrats divided, following a strenuous factional fight in the primary of last Saturday, the Republicans ordered their convention today with the avowed purpose of placing a strong ticket in the field.

50 YEARS AGO July 24, 1960

Accusing Governor Faubus of ringing down an “iron curtain of secrecy” on state records, candidate Joe Hardin at Pine Bluff last night said that Faubus’ only answer to specific charges has been that the charges were “too general.” The Grady businessman and farmer reviewed a list of charges he has leveled. He went into more detail on operations of the Arkansas Business Development Corp. and the association with it of two men identified with the Faubus administration.

Maumelle became a “real town” instead of a “new town” Tuesday as no objections were raised about the community creating a first-class city. During a brief ceremony Tuesday morning at the southern boundary of the new city, members of the Maumelle Residents Commission, Maumelle Residents Association and the Maumelle Incorporation Committee raised a new sign reading, “Welcome to the great CITY of Maumelle - Best Living in America - Population 5,371 and growing.” 10 YEARS AGO July 24, 2000

Since 1980, the Ronald McDonald house in Little Rock has given families of Arkansas Children’s Hospital patients a chance to stay just across the street from their loved ones. Sam Perroni, a lawyer who helped establish the house, hopes a new home will prove just as valuable a resource for patients at University Hospital and Arkansas Cancer and Research Center. Sunday, on grass-covered property across from University Hospital, Perroni announced plans to build a 13,000-square-foot home for cancer patients and their families, as well as for parents of premature babies at the hospital.
