— 100 YEARS AGO July 25, 1910

H.H. Holland, a telegraph operator for the Iron Mountain at Cypress Junction, about seven miles southwest of this city, who has invented and succeeded in building a new model aeroplane, made two tests of his air craft yesterday. The tests were not intended to be trial flights, but simply to determine whether the motor would work 25 yards.

50 YEARS AGO July 25, 1960

Gubernatorial Candidate H.E. Williams today charged that “other people in White County have had similar letters” to one which he Saturday accused Governor Faubus of writing in connection with the now defunct Arkansas Business Development Corp. Governor Faubus said again today that he had never written a letter to anyone recommending any kind of stock, that he was “going to get to the bottom of this,” and that the state had been investigating the ABDC firm for “6 or 8 months.” The letter, dated Jan. 21, 1959, on official stationery over Faubus’ purported signature, suggested that a Searcy woman “contact the Arkansas Development Corporation, 5th and Scott, Little Rock, Ark., for information about investment funds.” 25 YEARS AGO July 25, 1985

The Arkansas Power & Light Co. board of directors Wednesday unanimously rejected the Grand Gulf settlement offer of the state Public Service Commission staff. The staff proposed last week that AP&L’s share of the Mississippi nuclear plant be split 50-50 between ratepayers and stockholders. “The board felt it was just not financially feasible for the company to accept,” said Michael Bemis, AP&L executive vice president. The PSC rejected AP&L’s proposed settlement offer last week.

10 YEARS AGO July 25, 2000

A subcommittee of the state Board of Health on Monday recommended regulation of smoking in restaurants - but a dissenting member vowed to propose a total ban as early as Thursday. The panel voted 2-1 for a proposal that would require restaurants to prohibit smoking by Jan. 1, 2006, or have specially ventilated smoking areas.
