Mud, dead fish replace lake after Iowa dam break

A dam break has left hundreds of lakefront properties in eastern Iowa overlooking little more than acres of mud and dead fish.

The Lake Delhi dam in Delaware County gave way under the pressure of the rapidly rising Maquoketa River, decimating what had been a nine-mile-long lake.

Property owners hope it will be restored. But it’s up to the Lake Delhi Recreation Association to decide whether to rebuild the dam.

Board members are meeting Monday with local, state and federal officials. Association director Jim Willey says the group is committed to recovering the lake, but acknowledges funding could difficult.

And any plans are on hold until officials know whether a federal disaster declaration is granted.
