— 100 YEARS AGO July 27, 1910

More than 2,000 preachers of the state will be requested by Prof. Henry S. Hartzog, secretary of the Arkansas Education Commission, to preach a sermon during the month of August on the subject, “Public School Education in Arkansas.” Letters calling upon the ministers to do this in the movement to secure better school laws for the state have just been prepared by Prof. Hartzog and will be mailed within the next few days.

50 YEARS AGO July 27, 1960

An all-time record vote for a Democratic primary gave Orval E. Faubus of Huntsville an unprecedented nomination for a 4th term as governor in yesterday’s party primary. Unofficial returns from 2,242 of the state’s 2,353 precincts credited Faubus with 226,748 votes or nearly 59 percent of the 386,372 counted so far. The previous high for a party primary was the total of 383,904 in 1958.

25 YEARS AGO July 27, 1985

A lawsuit charging thecity of Jacksonville with “negligently and/or willfully” allowing two chemical companies to dump toxic wastes into the city’s old landfill, endangering nearby residents, was filed Friday in Pulaski County Circuit Court by counsel for 29 residents of Pulaski and Lonoke counties. By allowing Hercules Inc. and Vertac Chemical Inc. to dispose of hazardous wastes in the abandoned Graham Road city landfill “in a way that failed to ensure the chemicals would remain contained,” the suit said, Jacksonville officials “created an inherently dangerous condition and ultra-hazardous activity and a continuing nuisance.”

Supporters of the Committee for a Healthier Arkansas fell more than 1,000 signatures shy this week of reaching the threshold needed to get their tobacco money spending proposal on the ballot. But the coalition’s campaign manager said Wednesday that the group has submitted an additional batch of names for the secretary of state’s office to count in determining whether to certify the proposal for the ballot.
