Police investigate ASU sex assault

— Arkansas State University police said they questioned a suspect in an early-morning sexual assault on the Jonesboro campus Monday morning but hadn’t made an arrest by Monday evening.

Officers investigated a report of an assault at 2:10 a.m. Monday at the North Park Quad, an apartment complex on the northeastern side of the campus.

Police issued warnings through the campus’ emergency alert system, describing the suspect as a white man with blond hair.

Interim University Police Department Chief Randy Martin said a suspect had been questioned.

“After meeting with the prosecuting attorney and conducting interviews, we are notable to make an arrest at this time.”

Second Judicial District Prosecutor Mike Walden of Jonesboro will review the documents to determine whether to file charges.

Martin said the Monday assault was not related to two earlier sexual assault reports on campus.

On July 1, a woman reported an assault outside faculty housing on the western edge of campus. An 18-year-old ASU student also said she was assaulted during a fraternity party Feb. 27.
