— 100 YEARS AGO July 28, 1910 PARAGOULD - The plant of J.F. Hasty & Son’s stave and heading factory, one of the oldest and largest factories of the kind in this section, was badly damaged by a fire which raged in it for nearly two hours last night. The loss is estimated at $8,000. The fire broke out shortly after 9 o’clock and is supposed to have been caused by coals rolling out of the boiler fires.

50 YEARS AGO July 28, 1960

Today residents of Greater Little Rock were cleaning up damages estimated at many thousands of dollars left in the wake of a sudden, violent thunderstorm which rampaged its destructive way from Pike Avenue in North Little Rock last night across the Arkansas River and through the eastern section of Little Rock. TheU.S. Weather Bureau said it was not a tornado but that winds were 45 to 40 miles an hour with gusts up to 63 miles an hour. A rainfall of 29 of an inch was measured at Adams Field where eight airplanes were damaged.

25 YEARS AGO July 28, 1985

The front line in the battle over Arkansas’ responsibility for the Grand Gulf nuclear power plant shifts from Washington, D.C., to the state Public Service Commission on Monday. Hearings begin at 9 a.m. to decide whether a financial burden imposed upon Arkansas Power & Light Co. by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission can be passed on to its customers. The FERC decided June 13 that AP&L was responsible for 36 percent of the 90 percent share of the $3.5 billion Port Gibson, Miss., facility owned by the utility’s parent firm, Middle South Utilities Inc.

10 YEARS AGO July 28, 2000 HARRISON - An agricultural warehouse fire Thursday morning resulted in a toxic soup of herbicides and pesticides washing into Crooked Creek, where it killed thousands of fish. By Thursday evening, state environmental and health officials did not know the extent of the chemicals’ effect on the creek, but they issued health advisories as a precaution. “We have an idea about what’s in there, but not how much,” said Jamie Huens, a field inspector for the state Department of Environmental Quality.
