Fayetteville woman charged in toddler's death

A Fayetteville woman was arrested Thursday in the death of a toddler earlier this month.

Police said Amber Drain, 23, was charged with capital murder in the July 18 death of Dominic Doss, 2.

According to a news release, the toddler had been left in the care of Drain on July 18. She is the girlfriend of Dominic's father, Brandon Doss.

Fayetteville police responded to a medical emergency call on that day and found Dominic unresponsive at Drain's apartment on West 24th Street.

Dominic was transported to Washington Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Further investigation led detectives to believe that Dominic's death was the result of abuse. A police report said that Drain slapped the toddler and beat his head against the floor because he wouldn't stop crying. The State Medical Examiner office ruled his death a homicide.

Authorities said the investigation is ongoing.
