— Romero leading Jr. Stroke

Texarkana’s Sean Romero shot a 3-under-par 69 Wednesday and has opened up a seven-stroke lead after two rounds of the Arkansas State Golf Association Junior Boys Stroke Play Championship.

Romero, playing on his home course at Texarkana Country Club, is at 11 under for two days, seven strokes ahead of Little Rock’s Corbin Renner, who also shot 69 Wednesday. No other players are under par heading into today’s final round.

Hot Springs Village’s Grier Bennett shot a 7-over 79 Wednesday and has moved into a tie for first place in the Junior Girls Stroke Play Championship.

Bennett and Heber Springs’ Katie Webb are tied at 21 over.

Welch leads

Little Rock’s Jennifer Welch maintained her lead through two rounds of the Arkansas Women’s Golf Association Stroke Play Championship at The Course at Eagle Mountain in Batesville.

Welch shot a 4-overpar 76 Wednesday and has an eight-stroke lead over Elizabeth Wells and a 10-stroke lead over C.J. Bobbitt and Rachel Deal.

Welch won the AWGA Match Play Championship earlier this summer at Maumelle Country Club.

Fore States team

The Arkansas Women’s Golf Association has announced its team for the 16th annual Fore States Championship next week atBranson.

Four collegians headline the team. They include Little Rock’s Jennifer Welch (Arkansas State), Springdale’s Chelsey Cothran (Baylor), El Dorado’s Elizabeth Wells (SMU) and Fayetteville’s Alex Schulte (Arkansas Razorbacks).

Other team members include Greenbrier’s Rachel Deal, Fort Smith’s Tanna Richard, Blytheville’s Tracy Duncan, Bentonville’s Brenda Alexander and Brenda Carr and Russellville’s Julie Oxendine.

The team captain is Marilyn Leggenhager.
