— Jacksonville Air Force base gets new leader

JACKSONVILLE - Col. Michael A. Minihan will take over the command of Little Rock Air Force Base. Col. Greg. Otey will hand over the reins Monday. Minihan will come to Jacksonville from Travis Air Force Base, Calif., where he was vice commander for the 60th Air Mobility Wing.

Cleburne County Cardboard boat races on top 10 list

HEBER SPRINGS - TripAdvisor.com put out its list of America’s Top 10 Wackiest Summer Events, and the cardboard boat races on Greers Ferry Lake in Heber Springs was No. 9 on that list. The boatraces will be Saturday at Sandy Beach in Heber Springs.

Child drowns in lake

MID WAY BRIDGE - Lane Isaac Mathews, 4, of Batesville drowned July 20 while swimming with his family in Greers Ferry Lake. The 4-year-old, the son of Joshua and Amy Mathews of Batesville, went missing from the Mid Way Bridge area on the evening of July 20. The Greers Ferry Fire Department was the first to respond to the scene. Cleburne County Search and Rescue and Greers Ferry Police Department personnel also responded. The Mathews family had pulled their boat up on the shore and were swimming in the immediate area around their boat with their children when they discovered that 4-year-old Lane was missing. A search was initiated on land, and also in the water by the first diver on the scene. The diver was able to locate the 4-year-old and get him to the surface, where lifesaving efforts began.The child was taken to Baptist Medical Center in Heber Springs, where continued efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.. Stone County Names sought for memorial MOUNTAIN VIEW - Names are being sought for plaques that will be added to the new war memorial that will replace the old one in front of the Stone County Courthouse. Sharp County Watermelon Festival is set CAVE CITY - The 32nd annual Watermelon Festival will be Thursday, Aug. 12, through Saturday, Aug. 14, in Cave City.

Independence County Bank gets new CEO BATESVILLE - John F. Davis has taken over as Citizens Bank’s new president and CEO. He will come to Batesville from El Dorado, where he was chairman and CEO of Simmons First Bank.

Training center gets grants BATESVILLE - The White River Firefighters Training Center will expand after receiving a $100,000 legislative General Improvement Grant.

There are also plans to move the fire training center to the campus of the University of Arkansas Community College at Batesville through a $450,000 grant from the Department of Agriculture.
