AMERICAN LEAGUE: Moseley spot on in first NY start, earns another

— Dustin Moseley rewarded his manager for picking him to start Thursday and earned another start in the process.

Texarkana’s Moseley (1-0) won his first start since April 17, 2009, after a rough first inning in which he threw 31 pitches and escaped a basesloaded, one-out situation with only one run scoring. He allowed a run and four hits over six innings as New York won 11-4 to take three of four in a lopsided series that saw Alex Rodriguez extend his streak without a home run to seven games, leaving him at 599.

Moseley was tabbed Monday by Yankees Manager Joe Girardi to start because of Sergio Mitre’s poor spot start Saturday against Kansas City.Girardi said Moseley will start again Tuesday against Toronto at Yankee Stadium after holding Cleveland in check until New York took control with a seven-run seventh inning.

“It’s been a long road these last couple years,” said Moseley, who had surgery on his arm in 2008 and his hip last August. “To get a start and then go out there and keep the team in the game and eventually get a win worked out real good for me.”

Four of Moseley’s nine career victories are against Cleveland.

Robinson Cano connected for his 20th home run just after Rodriguez grounded out in the seventh. That started a string of nine consecutive Yankees reaching safely with two outs. Curtis Granderson and Rodriguez each had two-run singles in the seven-run rally.
