ELLEN TURNER CARPENTER, 93, entered the Kingdom ofHeaven on July 27, 2010, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born July 30, 1916, in Little Rock, Ark., to Gloss and Linnie Howard Turner.

Mrs. Carpenter was preceded in death by her husband Reuben A. Carpenter, parents, four sons, four sisters and three brothers. She is survived by four sons, Raymond P. (Barbara), Atlanta Ga., Ricardo G. (Talesa), Russell H. and Reagan V., all of Little Rock; two daughters, Rita C. White and Rose M. (Carl) Cooke, both of Little Rock; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and three great-greatgrandchildren.

Visitation will be Sunday, Aug. 1, 2010, 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., Mount Zion Baptist Church, 908 Cross St., Little Rock, Ark. GERALDINE ERNA HALL EMBERTON, 89, of Little Rock passedaway Tuesday, July 27, 2010. She was born in a farmhouse outside Rockdale, Texas, July 22, 1921, to the late Verna Lucy McClanahan Hall and the late Carlos Hall, a Singer sewingmachine salesman.

She was married to Burford Ray Emberton (born Red Boiling Springs, Tenn.) for 48 years. She loved beaches, flamingoes, playing kazoo in a senior band that visited nursing homes, Wheel of Fortune and AETN’s Brit-coms. She studied piano with Jimmy Hagan. Her favorite times were spent with her dog Lucy and grand-dog Dottie. She also loved her cruise to Alaska and trip to England with her husband and daughter. Her snappy Texas comeback was apparent to all she met and she loved being around people who enjoyed life. She was an antiques dealer and retired employee of Alcatel Lucent.

She is preceded in death by her mother; father; stepfather William D. Miller (born Tunica County, Miss.); sister, Mildred Roy Perry; nephew, Carlos Wyatt Perry. Survivors are her daughter, Janis D. Emberton of Little Rock; nephew, Jack Vernon Perry of St. Louis, Mo.; great-nephews, Scott (Amy), Steve, David, Bobby, Chris Perry; and great-niece, Jennifer Perry and great-greatnieces and nephews.

ELLEN “Mrs. M.G.” McMURRAY, 85, of Little Rock died July 26, 2010, in Katy, Texas. She was born in Abilene, Texas, on Jan. 1, 1925, to the late Dr. Vernon L. and Ruth P. McKee. She is also preceded in death by her husband, Martin Gaines McMurray; and a sister, Naomi Abernathy. Ellen graduated from Ouachita Baptist University and was an investigator for the EEOC. She was also a member of Pulaski Heights Baptist Church.

She is survived by her children, Sarah McMurray of Katy, Texas, Martin McMurray and his wife Mary of Powell, Ohio, and Lowell McMurray and his wife Kyly of Vancouver, Wash.; grandchildren, Brooks Ranton of Houston, Texas, Michael McMurray, Jason McMurray and Cassandra Green, all of Poteau, Okla.; one sister, Marian Anderson of Greely, Colo.; and one brother, Clay McKee of Smithville, Texas.

CHARLES “HILLBILLY” ROTH of North Little Rock passed away Wednesday, July 28, 2010, after a brief illness. He was born April 5, 1947. He is a well-known man around North Little Rock, where he lived for 25 years. He lived life to the beat of his own drum, with a ready laugh and a senseof humor.

Charles was a real character in his life and he will be sadly missed by a host of friends, so from Hillbilly, “Thanks for the memories.” He lost his faithful mother, Clara Davis in 2003 and is survived by his sister, Phyllis Hogan; three nephews, John Hogan, Rodney Hogan and Michael Hogan, all of Bossier City, La.; and several cousins.

The family wishes to thank the nurses and staff of Abington Place for all the care and compassion for Charles. They were really sweet to him. We also wish to thank the doctors and nurses at University Medical Center for taking such good care of him and for trying so hard to help him.

Sylvia Irene Scott went home to be with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on July 21, 2010. Sylvia and sister Ann are owners of the renowned catering company called Ann and Sylvia’s Catering. In 2004, the sisters appeared on the Jane Pauley Show and were later featured in the book catered for Ashley Judd during the filming of Come Early Morning.

Sylvia is survived by children: Buford “Al” Scott of Red Oak, Texas, Bryan E. Scott (Dorean), Mildred Scott-Davis (Tim), Joyce A. Smith, all of Little Rock, Ark; siblings: Ann D. ELMER VIRGIL SINKEY SR., 95, of North Little Rock died at home July 27th, 2010. He was born Oct. 4th, 1914, in Arkansas Post. Parents Elmer Bert and Ida May Sinkey preceded him in death, as did an infant daughter and nine siblings.

Survivors are wife of 43 years, Geraldine; two sisters, Helen and Edith; two sons, James Elmer and Elmer Virgil Sinkey Junior; one daughter, Carolyn; two stepdaughters, Carolyn Sue and Cookie; one stepson, Jimmy Don; and many grandchildren, greatgrandchildren and great-greatgrandchildren.

A special thank you to Baptist Home Health nursing staff Leah, Rebecca and Barbara for their many visits, special interest, kindness and educational support, and to the monitoring staff for their patience and understanding. Also thank you to Dr. Brad Jenkins and his office staff. Thanks to Wayne for help with the equipment. In spite of all your assistance, we lost the battle to keep Elmer here with us but all of you had a hand in making our journey a little easier. Thank you.

MARY JO FITZHUGH SMITH of Little Rock went to be with herLord, Thursday, July 29, 2010. Mary Jo was born to Jessie and Flint Ward on April 21, 1925, at Snyder, Texas. Her family moved to Malvern, Ark., in her very early childhood. She grewup in Malvern. After graduation she married Chester “Chuck” Fitzhugh. She worked for the Labor Department (Boiler Inspection Division) for 30 years and retired in 1987. She was a member of Highland Valley United Methodist Church and the Highlander Sunday School Class. She was a loving and devoted mother and grandmother.

Mary Jo was preceded in death by her mother and father and leaves to cherish her memory: her three children, Marilyn Fitzhugh Hutchison, Linda (Larry) Fitzhugh Yenner and Michael Joseph (Filomena) Fitzhugh; eight grandchildren, Greg (Lisa) Cash, Todd Cash, Carmen (Jimmy) Billingsley, Hollie Hutchison, John Hutchison, Janet (Jeff) Glass, Mary Jo (Todd) Koper and M.J. Fitzhugh; 12 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

JOSEPH PRICE SNODDY SR., 73, of Jacksonville passed awaySunday, July 25, 2010, at his home. He was born Feb. 17, 1937, in Winchester, Tenn., to the late J.A. and Nellie Steele Snoddy. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 42 years,Goldia Berry Snoddy. He retired from the U.S. Air Force (Master Sergeant), and from Maybelline-L’Oreal.

JAMES EDWARD “JIMMY” SPEARS, 66, of Gravel Ridge went to rest on July 28, 2010. He was born April 10, 1944, in Jacksonville to James E. and Flora L. Spears Johnson. Jimmy was a kindhearted man who worked in the outdoors most of his life. His main pleasure was sitting on the riverbank with a fishing pole in his hand.

He is predeceased by his father, James E. Spears; stepfather, George Johnson; wife, Sandra Spears; and a sister, Patricia Johnson. Survivors include his mother, Flora L. Johnson; daughter, Robin Jackson; sons, Jessie Spears and Chris Spears; sisters, Diane (Randall) Davis, Betty (Richard) Wright, Georgia Palmer, Brenda (Charles) Rettstatt; brothers, Wesley (Mary) Johnson, Michael (Jill) Johnson; two grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and his very good friend, Mary Millien.

She was born on October 5, 1932 to Alfred Francis and Marjorie Alice Salladay Marinshaw in Cleveland, Ohio. Mrs. Sivils was a domestic engineer and a Catholic, who loved attending Sunday school at First Baptist Church. She was a past president of League of Women Voters, a Girl Scout Leader for Troops 66 & 103, and the owner of The Sewing Basket in Crossett for 10 years.

Mrs. Sivils was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Thomas Earl Sivils. Survivors include four daughters, Libby Caston (Terry) of Russellville, Ark., Arlene Bates of Nashville, Tenn., Cheryl Towne (Bion) of Reno, Nev., and Kelley Howie (Curt) of Crossett, Ark.; one brother, Jack Marinshaw of Santa Clara, Calif.; two grandchildren, T.J. & Drew Watt; two step-grandchildren, Patric & Cole Howie. PINE BLUFF - Winfred Ray “Wimp” Jones, 81, of Pine Bluff died at home Wednesday, July 28, 2010. Born in Pine Bluff May 9, 1929, a son of the late Henry H. and Ruby Pierce Jones, he was a 1947 graduate of Pine Bluff High School. Mr. Jones joined the U.S. Army in 1947, serving in the Military Police through the Korean Conflict. Returning home in 1953, he joined his father in the operation of H. H. Jones & Son Farm, work he continued for thirty-five years. He also worked with his mother in the operation of Jones Cafe for many years at Noble Lake and later in Pine Bluff from 1985 until retiring as its owner in 2005. According to longtime customers, Jones Cafe was renowned throughout the state and regionally for its finecountry menu. The restaurant received many awards over the years for the quality of its food, service, and family friendly atmosphere. An avid Razorback fan, he was a member of First United Methodist Church. He served on the boards of directors of what is now Seabrook Family Christian Center, Linwood Schools, Pine Bluff Advertising and Tourist Promotion Commission, and National Little League, of which he served as president.

His survivors include his wife, Janice Faucett Jones, to whom he was married November 28, 1953 in Pine Bluff; sons, Randy Jones of Fayetteville, Arkansas and Jeff Jones (Ellen) of North Little Rock, Arkansas; daughter, Terri Jones Cash (Walter) of Pine Bluff; and grandchildren, Jennifer Jones, Jordin Jones, Justin Jones, Sean Jones, Christopher Cash, and Katie Cash.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, July 31, 2010 at First United Methodist Church with Reverend David Fleming officiating. WARREN - Johnnie Mack Groves, age 81, of Warren, Ark., died Wednesday July 28, at Bradley County Medical Center. Born November 2, 1928 in Warren, Ark., a son of the late Plesant Decatur Groves, Sr. and Hazel Blann Groves he was a retired skidder foreman for Potlatch Corporation, a Baptist and the widower of Raye Dean Duvall Groves who died January 5, 2010. They were united in marriage July 15, 1950.
