CONWAY State Health Department officials have shut down Beaverfork Lake near Conway to swimmers after tests on water samples from the lake found elevated levels of the E. coli bacteria.
The lake was closed to swimmers Saturday. Environmental health specialist Thomas Jones says one of the samples indicated an E. coli level four times too high and another showed a level eight times too high.
Jones says health department officials collected nine water samples Tuesday for more testing. Health officials say it will be Friday at the earliest before the results are in from tests on those samples.
Officials say the source of the elevated E. coli levels will be hard to determine, but that runoff from excessive rain could have played a role.
