Beaverfork lake closed due to elevated E. coli levels

By The Associated Press

This article was published June 2, 2010 at 9:27 a.m.

— State Health Department officials have shut down Beaverfork Lake near Conway to swimmers after tests on water samples from the lake found elevated levels of the E. coli bacteria.

The lake was closed to swimmers Saturday. Environmental health specialist Thomas Jones says one of the samples indicated an E. coli level four times too high and another showed a level eight times too high.

Jones says health department officials collected nine water samples Tuesday for more testing. Health officials say it will be Friday at the earliest before the results are in from tests on those samples.

Officials say the source of the elevated E. coli levels will be hard to determine, but that runoff from excessive rain could have played a role.

growing up i had a friend who had a house on the lake.during the wet season sewage water was always coming to the top of the ground and every rain would wash it into the lake.

It seems odd to me that the Health dept would close the lake to swimmers due to exposure to the E-coli, but they continue allow skiers??? Do they think that those skiers will never get wet or come into contact with the lake water?

I agree baitshop! I saw the jetskiers. It's also ok to allow fishing?? I was there Sat to see that it was closed. My dissapointment was that there was NO information on why it was closed available online, with the parks and recreation etc or in the news till now. Way to go on informing the public!
