LITTLE ROCK Authorities in Conway collected more than 33,000 prescription pills during an event aimed at keeping the drugs from reaching abusers, police said Monday.
The Conway Police Department and the Conway Regional Medical Center co-hosted the Drug Take-Back Saturday, offering area residents two drop-off sites to safely get rid of unneeded or leftover prescription medicines.
Officials were hoping to receive 20,00 prescription pills but ended up with 33,782. More than 10,000 non-prescription pills were also dropped off.
Arkansas is consistently ranked among the top 10 states with the highest rate of non-medical use of pain relievers by teenagers, Conway Police Department spokesman Chris Harris said in a statement.

What a toxic cocktail! I glad they weren't flushed. We don't need all those in the water system.

It is good that these meds are in a safe place. Teens are abusing persciption meds and parents need to be aware of what they have in their homes. Mixing drugs is a very serious problem with deadly consequences.

After the death of a relative last year, we discovered she had a boatload of RX's laying around the house. The coroner said flush them, a call to my Wally-World pharmacist said don't flush but did not know what else to do with them. Any suggestions? Maybe the state could start a program to get rid of this stuff without endangering the rest of us, perhaps send to the incinerator at PB arsnal?

Let's have regular collection days set up every month or supply a drop point that is available for anyone on any day.
How about a site at Conway Regional. Or, maybe the free clinic would like the extra publicity and could use some of the unopened prescriptions.
