— Authorities in Conway collected more than 33,000 prescription pills during an event aimed at keeping the drugs from reaching abusers, police said Monday.

The Conway Police Department and the Conway Regional Medical Center co-hosted the Drug Take-Back Saturday, offering area residents two drop-off sites to safely get rid of unneeded or leftover prescription medicines.

Officials were hoping to receive 20,00 prescription pills but ended up with 33,782. More than 10,000 non-prescription pills were also dropped off.

Arkansas is consistently ranked among the top 10 states with the highest rate of non-medical use of pain relievers by teenagers, Conway Police Department spokesman Chris Harris said in a statement.
