Housing agencies given $22 million

— Housing authorities across Arkansas received $22 million in annual federal grants last week to modernize their units or to build new ones.

Little Rock’s Housing Authority received $1,920,131 - the highest amount of the 106 agencies. North Little Rock was the second-highest with a $1,496,755 grant.

The awards are part of more than $2.3 billion the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development expects to disburse to 3,131 public housing authorities across the country.

The annual grants help agencies make large-scale improvements, such as new roofs or new plumbing and electrical systems.

Parris Towers in Little Rock will be outfitted with new windows because of the money, and North Little Rock’s Housing Authority plans to use its grant to continue upgrading apartments and playgrounds to accommodate families with disabilities.
