INTERLEAGUE: Pavano solid, Halladay struggles as Twins win

— Carl Pavano pitched a four-hitter, and Justin Morneau and Denard Span homered to lead the Minnesota Twins past Roy Halladay and the Philadelphia Phillies 4-1 on Sunday.

Pavano (8-6) won his third consecutive start. The right-hander struck out two and walked none in his ninth career complete game and second this season.

The only run Pavano allowed came on Wilson Valdez’s sixth-inning home run. He retired the next 13 batters before Ryan Howard’s two-out single in the ninth.

Jason Kubel and Joe Mauer had RBI singles for the AL Centralleading Twins.

Halladay (8-6) lost his third consecutive start, giving up a season-high 11 hits while striking out eight and walking none in eight innings.

MARLINS 4, RAYS 1

Josh Johnson outpitched David Price in a matchup of two of baseball’s top starters. Wes Helms hit a two-run home run and host Florida beat Tampa Bay. Johnson (8-2) gave up 6 hits in 8 innings, striking out 9, walking none and throwing 87 of his 117 pitches for strikes while lowering his ERA a tiny bit to 1.80. Leo Nunez pitched a perfect ninth for his 15th save in 18 chances.

RANGERS 5, ASTROS 4

Josh Hamilton tied a career high with five hits, including a tying single in the ninth inning and a go-ahead single in the 10th that lifted visiting Texas over Houston for its season-best eighth consecutive victory. Julio Borbon hit a leadoff single in the 10th against Casey Daigle (0-1). After Vladimir Guerrero was intentionally walked with two outs, Hamilton singled off Gustavo Chacin.

YANKEES 4, METS 0

CC Sabathia was dominant over eight innings in his rematch against Johan Santana, and Mark Teixeira hit a grand slam to help the visiting Yankees beat the Mets to secure a Subway Series split. Sabathia (8-3), denied a shot at a shutout by a 22-minute rain delay in the eighth, allowed four hits. The Yankees and Mets went 3-3 against each other this season.

ATHLETICS 3, CARDINALS 2

Kevin Kouzmanoff had a season-high four hits, including a home run, and Trevor Cahill threw six strong innings to lead visiting Oakland over St. Louis. The A’s snapped a four-game losing streak with their second victory in nine games.

WHITE SOX 6, NATIONALS 3

Paul Konerko drove in three runs, Freddy Garcia won his fifth consecutive start and visiting Chicago beat Washington for its season-high sixth victory in a row. The Nationals lost their season-worst sixth consecutive game.

TIGERS 3, DIAMONDBACKS 1

Max Scherzer pitched seven impressive innings against his former team and late home runs by Brennan Boesch and Carlos Guillen rallied host Detroit over Arizona. Boesch and Guillen hit consecutive home runs in the seventh to help the Tigers finish up an 8-1 homestand against NL opponents. Arizona has lost 15 of its past 16 road games.

CUBS 12, ANGELS 1

Carlos Zambrano pitched seven strong innings, Derrek Lee drove in a season-high four runs and Geovany Soto hit a home run to send host Chicago past Los Angeles.

GIANTS 9, BLUE JAYS 6

Freddy Sanchez, Pat Burrell and Aubrey Huff hit home runs andvisiting San Francisco beat Toronto for its first victory at an AL ballpark this season.

BRAVES 8, ROYALS 5

Eric Hinske (Arkansas Razorbacks) hit a two-run double to break an eighth-inning tie and Chipper Jones had three RBI to help host Atlanta beat Kansas City for its fifth consecutive victory.

PIRATES 5, INDIANS 3

Rookie Pedro Alvarez’s sacrifice fly in the eighth inning drove in the go-ahead run and host Pittsburgh withstood Carlos Santana’s big game to beat Cleveland.

RED SOX 2, DODGERS 0

Clay Buchholz and two relievers pitched a combined four-hit shutout to help Boston beat the Dodgers and send Manny Ramirez back to Los Angeles without a victory. Buchholz (10-4) allowed 3 hits, 3 walks and 2 hit batsmen while striking out 4 to complete the three-game sweep and win for the seventh time in his past eight starts.

National League BREWERS 6, ROCKIES 1 Rickie Weeks and Corey Hart hit two-run doubles in a five-run ninth inning, and visiting Milwaukee averted a series sweep by rallying past Colorado.
